Although born in Indonesia, he is a Dutch national and received most of his education in the United States. He graduated from Eaglebrook School and Phillips Andover Academy, and holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Stanford University. He started his communications career as a joumalist with The Straits Times and Associated Press in Malaysia, then returned to the US to, first, work for the late Robert F. Kennedy before joining Exxon and subsequently Mobil in New York City. It was during his Kennedy, Exxon and Mobil years that he began to be exposed - from the client side - to public relations and advertising. (more background on ISC web page)
